UN Women and United Nations Celebrate International Women’s Day 2023 with DigitALL Theme: Empowering Women in the Digital Age

Published:

As we celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, 2023, UN Women and the United Nations invite everyone to join in commemorating the theme of DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality. The contributions of women in the digital world are often overlooked, despite their significant achievements since the earliest days of computing. Women have made remarkable progress in the field, despite historical challenges that have excluded them from opportunities in tech design and governance.

Despite progress, a persistent gender gap in digital access remains, and women’s underrepresentation in STEM education and careers poses a significant barrier to their participation in the digital revolution. Additionally, women are threatened by online gender-based violence, and a lack of legal recourse often forces them out of the digital spaces they occupy.

However, the digital age is also presenting new opportunities for the empowerment of women, girls, and other marginalized groups. From gender-responsive digital learning to tech-enabled sexual and reproductive healthcare, digital technology offers unprecedented opportunities to address inequality and disparities.

As we face global crises, it is essential to make the digital world safer, more inclusive, and more equitable. Everyone, including governments, activists, and the private sector, must take steps to create a better future for all humanity and all life on Earth. UN Women and the United Nations are calling on everyone to power on in their efforts to empower women in the digital age.

Join the celebration of International Women’s Day by sharing visuals, messaging, and more from our IWD social media package. Also, tune in to the UN Observance of International Women’s Day on March 8 at 10 am ET. Together, we can make a significant impact on the future of women in the digital world.
